I have been experimenting with using the ultrasonic distance sensor with modular synth for an interactive sound and movement based collaboration with PIMA thesis students.

This week I wanted to make a Max MSP patcher version of the Feather Sense Demo we had. To do this, I combined the Feather Sense Demo Arduino IDE code we had with the Max patcher we had receiving data from the Arduino accelerometer. By inspecting the Feather Sense Demo code, the accelerometer code, and the Max MSP accelerometer data recevier patcher, I figured out that I needed to break the integers down into one single line to work with the way we had set the Max patcher to receive data from the serial monitor. So I removed all text, comments, and line breaks from the code that we had working to print nicely and informatively in the Arduino serial montor, and had it print 1 long line of integers for interpretation and unpacking in Max. Then in Max, I added 16 more floats to the unpack object (in addition to the accelerometer floats), and added corresponding integer boxes then I labeled them accordingly. Next step will be calibrating and figuring out approprate scaling for general purposes. Codes for these hacks are under the example videos.

Arduino: Here you can see the moment I removed the line breaks from the serial print part of the code (after removing comments) and the data started being printed on one line

Here I have examples of (1) Blink only (2) Analog input, analog output, serial output, and (3) both combined together in one sketch and on one breadboard.

However when combined, the dimming and brightening of the LED seems more stepped, not so fine and gradual, like only 3 steps.

Sensors encountered between BK College and home:

  • Sensor on bathroom paper towel dispenser

  • Traffic light

  • Cameras in my building, I think they only record when motion is sensed

Not too many to be honest, or they are hidden into the everyday and I’m not noticing… my commute from BK college to home is quite rustic though too
